Look at this stuff
Isn’t it neat?
Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?
Wouldn’t you think I’m the girl
The girl who has everything?
I think by the age of 4 I knew all of the words and I would actively search for rocks in oceans so that I could pose like Arielle. Yes, this is a true story.
Well, needless to say that The Little Mermaid was always my favourite Disney movie. It was probably because I swam competitively for so many years, but Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle were pretty big influencers too.
When AquaMermaid School contacted me to see if I wanted to try out one of their classes… I was thrilled to say yes! [Note: AquaSirène in Quebec]
I admit to being nervous showing up to my very first Montreal blogging event in a bathing suit! To my delight I actually knew some of the other participants! It was a mix of blogging and non-blogging people and I knew some of each! It’s times like showing up to a mermaid class that you realize just how small Montreal is!
There were three tail colours to choose from, and staying true to The Little Mermaid I had to pick green.
After warming up with a few swim laps, we put on our fins, pulled up our tails and giggled our way to the other end of the pool. Initially the fins required some getting used to, but it quickly became a fluid movement for me. Growing up on a swim team definitely helped. If you’ve never swam ‘butterfly’ stroke, then it might be a bit tricky for you to swim with your legs bound together.
There were seven of us with one instructor and we had fun learning to swim with our mermaid tails. We swam on our fronts, backs and sides. We swam while holding hands and swimming through hula hoops. We did handstands and dove to the bottom of the pool.
I couldn’t resist but to do a few summersaults on my own and it was a bit harder than I had imagined but a super fun experience.
We ended the session with some group poses and adequate time to take some photos. I mean, we needed Instagram pics!
There were people prior to our lesson that were using the pool with their own mermaid tails. It turns out that if you want to buy your own tail, Montreal has a pool that you can use! There were adults and kids and I was totally envious of the kids. Where was my mermaid tail 23 years ago?
Swimming with a mermaid tail was an experience that I can appreciate. It was fun to float around with the fins and I know that everyone in the group had a really great time. It also ended up being a great workout for my abdominal muscles! Bonus!
However, I don’t think that I would do it again. The class was primarily for learning how to use the tail as well as taking photos, which wouldn’t be beneficial to someone taking the class for a second time. I can see the benefit of taking private lessons to work on swim technique, but not a group class. It might be a fun low-key birthday activity if you have the budget for it!
You can always buy your own tail! If I had my own pool I totally would invest in a mermaid outfit. My four-year old dreams would come true!
I am so glad that AquaMermaid School invited me to participate in this because now I can say that I was a mermaid for an afternoon!
